In the Cretaceous Era, the
Pterosaurs became very large indeed. A pterosaur called Pteranodon had
a wingspan of about 24 feet ( 8 metres) and another called Quetzalcoatlus
had a wingspan of 36 feet (12 metres). This was the largest flying
animal that there has ever been.

These first appeared in the
Middle Triassic Era. That was about 215 million years ago. Most
fossils from this time are single bones or parts of bones. There is a
very good fossil site in Italy where whole fossils have been found.

In the Jurassic Era, the early long tailed pterosaurs were common.

In the middle of the Jurassic, a new type of short tailed pterosaur appeared. This type of pterosaur was called a pterodactyl.
